“We were a very small start-up when we began in 1973,” recalls Manfred Lupke, Founder, Presi­dent, Chief Executive Of­ficer and an inductee into the Plastics Academy Hall of Fame.

“Our company consisted of myself – a mechanical engineer, a colleague of mine and my wife who was responsible for the entire office.”

Today, the company employs over 250 people and has delivered over 1,300 machines to more than 100 countries. With headquarters in Concord, Ontario, Canada, Corma has regional sales and services offices in Europe, Asia and Latin America and a manufacturing facility in China.

“Over 20 years ago, we were invited to join one of the first delegations to China to explore investment and manufacturing opportunities,” says Lupke. “This initial introduction to the Chinese market and later experiences prompted us to invest in China around 10 years ago. Corma Shanghai is an important link in our supply chain.”

Corma’s machinery features the latest cutting-edge technology designed to help companies produce high-quality pipes with optimal efficiency, cost-effectiveness and space requirements while minimizing downtime.

“Plastic corrugated pipes and tubing produced on our machines range from 1 mm to 3,000 mm in diameter and we are able to customize production systems and auxiliary equipment to meet the specific requirements of our clients,” says Lupke.

Corma’s Supercooling technology channels cool air into the mold blocks to maintain optimal temperature.

In 1973, Corma introduced the first air-cooled corrugator machine to the world.  Since then, every single one of our corrugators has been air-cooled, making it a distinct signature of our product line.  At the time, we were ridiculed by our competitors who were all using water-cooling.  However, it would appear that their technology has reached its limits as we are noticing more companies developing so-called “new” air cooling systems that we have already been refining for the past 41 years.  It has evolved to include our patented Supercooling™ system and patented Insulated Cooling Enclosure, combining to make Corma air-cooled corrugators some of the most efficient and effective machines currently available.

When the plastic sets up and cools down it shrinks and pulls away from the mold, creating a gap between the pipe and the mold that effectively acts as an insulator.  Picture a cold glass of water with condensation that runs along the sides – if you take both hands and hold the glass, your hands will feel very cold.  However, if you remove your hands from the glass and stay close to it without touching, you will feel almost nothing cooling your hands.  The small air gap insulates the cold glass from your hands, similar to how a double pane window insulates the outside temperature from the inside the house.  This principle is also applicable to mold blocks and plastic.

The concept of our Supercooling™ technology (patented in 1998) is to channel cold air into the gap between the pipe and mold to maximize cooling efficiency.  Cold air travels through the vacuum forming slits on one end of our mold block into the gap, then exiting out through the slits on the other end.  This method efficiently cools both the pipe as well as the mold blocks.

Corma’s corrugator enclosure maintains optimal operating temperature of the corrugator system as well as prevents condensation from building.

In addition, our Insulated Cooling Enclosure is a climate controlled system that maintains optimal operating temperature throughout the year.  This means energy requirements are lower than conventional cooling systems that continuously blow air because our enclosure only requires energy to cool the corrugator when needed, which also prevents overcooling issues as well.

The combination of our Supercooling™ technology and insulated cooling enclosure increases productivity from 25% up to 50% with less energy usage and consistently produces high quality pipes that have minimal inherent stress.  As an innovation leader, we are already working on a new patent for mold block technology with a cutting-edge air-cooling system to further enhance the capabilities of our clients’ businesses.  Please stay tuned for more information on how Corma can make a positive impact on your bottom line!

Driven by the pioneering spirit of founder Manfred Lupke, Corma has contributed to advancing Canadian technology in corrugated plastic pipe machinery. Through its proprietary machinery and solutions, Corma enables clients in the plastic pipe manufacturing industry to optimise their manufacturing processes.

“Up to 90 per cent of piping system costs are attributed to raw materials,” says Stefan Lupke, executive vice-president of Corma. “Corrugated plastic pipes can reduce material cost by more than 20 per cent, so our machinery helps our customers reduce costs significantly in the long run.”

The world’s leading companies in the sewage, drainage, cable ducting, vehicle, agriculture and medical industries use Corma’s corrugated pipes, which offer lightweight alternatives to solid pipes.

Being a niche player, Corma has successfully outlasted international competition by developing cutting-edge technology to address global market demands.

Corma’s patented corrugated plastic pipe machines utilise air-cooling systems. While eliminating the need for large water chillers, its machines also remove maintenance and condensation problems. The company’s innovations include eco-friendly technologies such as machines that use recycled material.

“We are able to service customers looking for quality and performance of equipment,” Lupke says.

With customers in more than 90 countries, Corma serves its Chinese and regional Asian clients through its Shanghai plant. “As our clients increase their presence in countries such as China, we are able to procure and service them locally and provide machinery to address their needs,” Lupke says.

With the increasing need for sewage and draining infrastructure in emerging countries, Corma’s technology will also be able to provide a sustainable solution in areas such as Southeast Asia and Africa. “We will continue to build capabilities for lighter but stronger pipes and find ways to make our technology accessible to more people,” Lupke says.

How to hatch a sale

Foreign buyers are pretty import­ant customers for Concord, Ont.- based Corma Inc. In fact, with­out them, Corma wouldn’t have many customers at all.

Family-owned Corma has been manu­facturing custom machinery for the pro­duction of corrugated plastic pipe and tub­ing since 1973. Executive vice-president Stefan Lupke says more than 95% of Corma’s revenue comes from export mar­kets, including the U.S., Mexico, India and China. “We ship to 92 countries,” says Lupke. “Our business is basically depend­ent on exporting.”

Due to the nature of his business, Lupke has become somewhat of an expert on the subject of foreign-buyer financing, a program available to all Canadian export­ers through Export Development Corp. (EDC), Although EDC is probably best known for insuring the foreign receivables of Canadian companies, the crown cor­poration is growing (and trying to pro­mote) its still nascent foreign-buyer finan­cing service, through which foreign companies are provided with loans, lines of credit or bank guarantees to help them buy from Canadian suppliers.

“At some point, we will ask clients if they require financing to do the deal,” Lupke explains. “If the answer is yes, we contact the EDC, then they contact the client and inform them about the procedure. We are not involved in the financing after that.”

The EDC can provide direct financing for the foreign buyer for up to 85% of the value of the deal. Alternatively, the foreign company can arrange financing for the transaction through a bank in its home country or through another foreign bank, with the EDC providing the loan guaran­tee. In either scenario, the Canadian exporter gets paid directly by the EDC, which assumes all of the risk of the foreign buyer defaulting.

Although there is no limit on the size of deals eligible for foreign-buyer financing, most deals involving small and medium-sized exporters fall in the $500,000 to $5-million range, says Tom Sloan, EDC’s vice-president of small business and com­mercial markets. In most cases, the trans­actions involve the sale of machinery or hard goods. “We deal mostly with com­panies involved in light manufacturing, resource extraction and some infrastruc­ture—cases in which you have an asset that can secure the financing,” says Sloan.

The foreign buyer undergoes a rigorous due-diligence process to determine its ability to handle the financing terms, with most deals structured over a two- to five-year term with bimonthly payments set at rates competitive with other OECD countries.

Like Corma, Jamesway Incubator Company Inc. depends upon foreign markets for upwards of 95% of its business. The Cambridge, Ont.-based company manufactures poultry incubators and associated automation and ventilation systems that it ships to custom­ers in about 60 countries. Company president Ian McKinnon says Jamesway uses the EDC’s foreign-buyer financing program to complete three or four deals a year out of about 50 in any given year. “It isn’t necessary on most deals, but it helps when  it is a tricky situation and we feel we need more assurances,” says McKinnon.

Jamesway has used foreign-buyer finan­cing to secure deals in markets as disparate as Ireland and Uganda. Depending on the market, says McKinnon, the foreign buyer may not have easy access to financing sources or may simply be looking for a better rate through their vendor.

To qualify for financing, prospective borrowers must provide at least three years of audited financial statements, a bank reference and other key information vetting the borrower. EDC does not exclude any countries from the for eign-buyer financing program, but the speed at which the deal gets done (if it can be done at all) depends, to a large extent, on the risk profile of the foreign market involved. If the borrower is in the U.S. or a strong European Union country, the financing can be put in place in a matter of weeks, says Sloan. If, however, the for eign buyer is based in a more unstable region, such as Central America or Africa, it could take several months to put the deal in place. “It doesn’t take days,” says Sloan.

“We really have to look at each deal on a case-by-case basis.”

Regardless of how long the process may take, Corma sometimes has no option other than foreign-buyer financing to make a deal happen. Because so many of Corma’s customers are based in markets that would normally be classified as medium- to high-risk, traditional Canadian banks don’t want to get involved. In fact, Lupke sees the EDC as an essential tool for any small company hoping to do business foreign markets. “At the very least,” he says, “it keeps us on an even playing field with companies from other countries, such as Germany and Italy, that can also offer their customers government-sponsored buyer-financing programs.”

McKinnon adds that the EDC’s due-diligence process also helps his company avoid making mistakes with some foreign buyers. “We have had deals in which the EDC has come to us early in the process and said, ‘Maybe you should just walk away from this one.’” –FRANK CONDRON

The candidate should have an understanding of plastics processing and pipe extrusion.

The successful candidate will have good communication skills (an additional language is always an asset) and be able to work unsupervised while working to deadlines.   The candidate will be expected to do international travel 60 percent of the time including weekends and work from their home office when not on assignment.

Case Study: In faraway markets, Ontario machinery maker builds solid business

Since 1973, Corma Inc. has produced corrugated plastic pipe manufacturing machinery and equipment with a focus on international markets. Stefan Lupke, executive vice-president, says, “My father, a mechanical engineer from Germany, realized there was a niche market for corrugated pipes, but that the company couldn’t rely just on sales in Canada and in the northern U.S. From the beginning, his strategy was setting up international agency sales offices to promote our products.”

Participation in global trade shows and partnership with Export Development Canada and the Canadian International Development Agency have helped the company create awareness and build relationships. Headquartered in Toronto, Corma now has offices, sales agencies and service centres throughout North America and in Germany, Slovakia, China, Portugal, Turkey, India and Central America.

“Even when the [North American] economy is strong, there is high saturation. Companies have to go out and find new markets. There’s obviously more expense, but we’ve now exported to over 90 different countries.” Stefan Lupke, Executive Vice-President, Corma Inc.

While the company’s markets continue to expand with the need for infrastructure in developing countries, there is still work to be done in branding Canada as a mechanical and technical leader, says Mr. Lupke. “Many of our major projects provide water infrastructure, for which demand continues to grow in India, Africa, China and Central and South America. But our major competitors are German companies, so we’re always fighting that ‘made in Germany’ brand, which is very strong.”

Organizations such as Corma no longer have the luxury of relying on sales in North America, he says. “Even when the economy is strong, there is high saturation. Companies have to go out and find new markets. There’s obviously more expense, but we’ve now exported to over 90 different countries.”

Partnership with Export Development Canada has enabled the company to leverage opportunity in developing markets with market research and products such as receivables insurance, contract frustration insurance and political risk insurance. “This year, less than 5 per cent of our sales occurred in Canada, and 75 per cent occurred outside of North America. EDC was involved in many of these projects in one way or another,” says Mr. Lupke.

New installation from Corma Inc. helps meet growing demand for corrugated plastic pipe in Africa

Corma Inc., a world leader in corrugated plastic pipe manufacturing equipment, has recently partnered with prominent international manufacturer Grupo Fersil to meet the growing demands of Africaʼs large civil engineering projects. Corma has equipped the Grupo Fersil subsidiary FIL – Tubos Angola with two complete manufacturing lines to produce double walled polypropylene corrugated pipes ranging from 50 to 1,200 mm O.D.

This new turnkey manufacturing installation in Luanda/Angola will supply corrugated plastic pipes used in drainage, sewage and cable ducting applications for Africaʼs expanding infrastructure improvements. The two manufacturing lines boast Cormaʼs patented Double Layer In-Line Coupling Technology for the highest quality couplings. FIL will also benefit from Cormaʼs latest Insert Technology which facilitates the manufacture of pipe in multiple stiffness classes without the need to change Mold Blocks.

Corma Inc. Helps Lead a Breakthrough in Double Wall Corrugated Plastic Pipes in India

Corma Inc., a world leader in corrugated plastic pipe manufacturing equipment, has recently partnered with the Kolkata-based international operating Alom Group of Companies to meet the growing demands of India’s burgeoning urban infrastructure.

Corma has equipped the Alom Group subsidiary Alom Poly Extrusions Ltd. with two complete manufacturing lines to produce Double Wall Corrugated High Density Polyethylene Pipes from 50 to 1,500 mm outer diameter. Thanks to Corma’s patented technology, the Alom Group is the first company in India to offer Double Wall Corrugated HDPE pipes over 1,000 mm.

Corma wins infringement patent suit in Shanghai against Jwell Machinery Co.

Corma Inc.’s Patent Infringement Suits in Shanghai: Are about to Come to the End

Recently Manfred A.A.Lupke, legal representative of Corma Inc., has entered agreements regarding enforcement settlement with three defendants for patent infringement cases which were instituted in Shanghai. A total amount of RMB 750,000 yuan in total has been adjudged as compensation to Lupke after trials of second instance. Lupke won the law suits.

The patent infringement centers on Corma’s exclusive Mold Block Quick Return Technology, the use of which increases output rates while offering the pipe producer a reduction in the capital expenditure
for moldblocks.

The three defendant Chinese manufacturers, Shanghai Jwell Machinery Co., ERA Construction Materials Development Co. and Anhui Guotong High-tech Pipes Co.Ltd had been decided by court as having manufactured, sold and used products infringing Lupke’s patents for business purposes, therefore were put under the civil liabilities as to cease to produce the infringing conducts and compensate the damage.

After two years of court hearing procedures and another two years pursuing the enforcement of effective civil verdicts, Lupke wishes the enforcement procedure will end very soon.

How one manufacturer headed off the Chinese threat

Back in 2000, Concord, Ont.-based Corma Inc., which makes corrugated plastic pipe manufacturing machinery and equipment, was facing a number of looming threats to its business in some 80 countries. But as soon as the writing began to appear on the wall, Corma set out to develop and implement a proactive strategy to deal with those threats. Thanks to that, the company’s revenue has not only continued to grow, despite the recession, it has improved its efficiencies while reducing costs, established a presence in a foreign market, protected its patented property and left most of its competitors far behind.

“Corma’s business has always been export driven,” says Stefan Lupke, the company’s executive vice-president, adding that since the company’s inception in 1973, its annual domestic sales have never accounted for more than 5% of its total sales revenue. Despite its geographical reach, Corma’s market is a niche one, with its main competitors based in Germany.

“It was a fairly level playing field,” says Mr. Lupke. “Then the Chinese came on at high speed, and we were concerned. I think some of our German

competitors had a bit more of an arrogant attitude, believing the Chinese wouldn’t have the quality, just have a cheap product no one would buy. They did have a cheap product, but the quality improved each day.”

These new Communist China capitalist contenders were not pulling any punches – and their cutthroat strategy included copying Corma’s products and selling them for a third of the cost. “They copied the equipment right down to the last detail and, yes, the quality wasn’t quite there, but at a third of the price, it did prompt a lot of people in some of the developing markets to buy a lot of their equipment,” Mr. Lupke says. “We had to rethink our strategy and how we’re going to survive.”

Luckily, Manfred Lupke, the company’s founder, chief executive and Mr. Lupke’s father, is a man of foresight. “My father had begun applying for patents in China in the late 1980s,” Mr. Lupke says. “Everyone laughed at him. But we just kept on with that.”

Corma, which has approximately 30 patents issued in China, set out to defend its intellectual property rights in that country and has won several IPR infringement cases there against Chinese copycats.

“A lot of these copycats stopped copying our machinery and started copying the German machinery, which was not patented in China. It decimated some of those German companies.”

Corma’s strategy, however, went far beyond this because it was also looking at threats from the changing landscape in the manufacturing industry. “The playing field has changed and you have to adapt and have a global strategy, because if you’re just manufacturing in Canada or here in Southern Ontario, you’re not going to be competitive any more,” Mr. Lupke says.

He says it was imperative to review the company’s entire operation to find improved, cost-efficient methods and procedures to build its equipment, while maintaining and even improving their quality.

“This was the reason we established Corma Shanghai Inc.,” Mr. Lupke says. That was in 2006, but the company first did extensive research, including consulting with Export Development Canada, the Canadian Embassy in Beijing and Consulate in Shanghai.

Expanding into a foreign market, says Mark Bolger, EDC senior advisor, Asia, “does require taking a serious look at the opportunities, stepping back and applying sound business and commercial due diligence and making the choices that make the most sense. It’s not something a company should blindly rush into.”

Corma, for example, spent close to three years fruitlessly looking for a like-minded joint-venture partner. “Ultimately, we made the decision to form a wholly owned foreign enterprise operating in Shanghai,” says Mr. Lupke, whose company turned to EDC for help in acquiring political risk insurance for its foreign investment. In turn, this helped Corma secure financing from its bank.

“We are convinced that by finding and leveraging the efficiencies in our production process through our activities in Corma Shanghai, Corma Inc. has been able to maintain and, in fact, increase sales and our market position by 13% over the past two years,” Mr. Lupke says. “Given the tremendous pressure on the manufacturing sector, we are very pleased with these results. Corma has a full order book for 2010, whereas our traditional competitors from Germany are experiencing reduced sales and have had to shorten their work week.”

Instead of facing threats, Corma is now well positioned to seize growing opportunities arising from the demand for infrastructure for clean water in India, Africa, and Central and South America.

“It’s really worked out well for us,” Mr. Lupke says.

Corma machinery and production systems have been known to last for many, many years of operation. In fact, there are numerous Corma pipe production systems built in the 1970’s that are still producing plastic corrugated pipe today. Our machines are so well engineered, that there is no reason that they cannot go on producing pipe for the foreseeable future (with regular maintenance). That focus on enduring quality has allowed us to offer clients an optional, renewable, extended mechanical warranty.  Our extended warranty includes annual systems inspection, and onsite operator/user training. A company may purchase an extended warranty for new equipment, or for existing equipment already in operation.

Quick change over and easy handling

Corma’s Mold Blocks are maintenance free. There are no cooling water channels that need to be cleaned frequently, such as it is common practice for direct water cooled corrugators.

Quick change over times are ensured by Corma’s quick change system for mold blocks. Mold blocks can be changed without use of any tools. Smaller molds are changed by hand and for larger diameters have their own automated changing unit.

We ensure a constant molding temperature.

Super Coupling – An Evolution of Corma’s Coupling Technology

Corma Super Coupling

Corma’s new Super Coupling continues a long history of innovation in coupling technology.  We first developed and patented the single layer in-line coupling in 1985, which then led to our patented designs for both the regular and bell & spigot double layer in-line couplings.

In 2016 Corma has developed the Super Coupling (patent pending) as an innovative and cost effective solution that significantly increases the effectiveness of the pipe’s seal.

The Corma Super Coupling utilizes an extended sleeve to create an even more robust seal between the pipe layers within the coupling.  In addition, it is also designed to maintain a full seal even during events such as earthquakes, high traffic loads and imperfect installation that cause movements in the soil.

In a situation where the pipe is partially inserted into the coupling, the extended sleeve of the Super Coupling maintains a full seal, reducing the chance of obstructions and maintains the strength and integrity of the joint.  In contrast, the overlap on many other couplings on the market are too short and compromise the seal when there are movements in the soil or if the coupling is shifted during installation.  This can cause a void between the pipe layers and allow debris to accumulate.

As an evolution of Corma’s in-line coupling production capabilities, the Super Coupling can also be manufactured in-line on Corma corrugated plastic pipe production lines.  This significantly increases productivity and decreases cost since no downstream belling machines are required.  In addition, only one sealing ring is needed for the pipe connection to form water tight joints.

Mold Block Inserts

Most of our customers produce different ring stiffness classes in order to fulfill various market requirements. Therefore we are offering our patented Mold Block Insert Technology. This system enables you to produce for example optimized SN4 and optimized SN8 pipes with only one set of molds, by changing Mold Inserts and Cooling Plug only.

It can be used also to optimize pipe profiles for use of different raw materials.

Pipe after-cooling equipment is particularly important for use with slower-setting polyolefins.

Corma’s recirculating Pipe Aftercoolers comes complete with a haul-off geared to the corrugator, water pump and a water blow-off-station. The haul-off keeps the pitch of the relatively soft polyolefin to specifications while the profile is cooled and set in a water spray shower.

Our two channel double wall die also can be changed from a two-extruder operation to a single extruder operation simply by re-assembly.

Corma’s patented Single Channel Double Wall Die

Ideal solution for the use of PVC materials, but also designed for PE and PP materials.
With the single channel double wall die our customers can produce either double or single wall corrugated pipes. The change from double to single wall operation, or vice versa, takes only minutes, as simply the tooling part at the tip of the die must be changed.

Compact Die for Large Diameter Double Wall Pipes

Especially designed for the production of large diameter pipes in PP and HDPE.
Adjustments to the wall thickness and the die centering are easy to perform while in operation.

The compact die consists of a base and all different tooling sizes are mounted to this die. Only a different feed block is required for changeover and therefore changeovers are quick and easy.

Further advantages such as Vacuum Cooling Plugs, preparation for In-Line Couplings and the internal pipe cooling system are all available for use with the compact die.

Corrugator Cooling Enclosure

Our corrugators are covered with a Cooling Enclosure. With this insulation we maintain the optimal molding temperature for mold blocks. The climate inside the corrugator is stable, cold and dry.

Even in countries with high humidity our Corrugators do not have problems with condensation water, such as it occurs on direct water cooled corrugators.

Supercooling™

Corma’s patented pipe and mold block cooling method – a breakthrough in corrugated pipe production

The shrinkage gap is a very poor conductor of heat and therefore highly inefficient. Corma’s engineers have taken advantage of the pipe shrinkage and developed a patented cooling system called Supercooling. Cold air is channeled through the vacuum forming slits around the pipe, as soon as the pipe shrinks away from the mold block surface.

Unified mold block system

Interchangeability of mold blocks

Mold blocks from smaller or lager corrugators within the same family grouping can be used on other Corma corrugators in that grouping without any adaptors.

Save investment costs

For example mold blocks for a 830 Corrugator can be used on a 1530 Corrugator, as both Corrugators use mold blocks of 4 inch width.

Die Equipment

Corma’s specially developed die heads interface with any Corma system and any make of suitable extruder: all die heads are custom-built to meet end-product requirements.

In order to manufacture perfect pipes easy and accurate adjustability on the die heads is a must have.

It is needed to adjust following parameters:

These parameters can be adjusted in a very easy way on Corma’s die heads. Outer and inner layer of the pipe can be centered. The die gap for the outer wall can be adjusted to vary the pipe profile thickness, the same applies for the inner layer in order to vary the inner wall thickness.

Every die design comes with a quick change over solution, which provides shortest change over times, resulting in greatly reduction of down times of the corrugated pipe production line.
Corma Corrugators have a very short mold closing section resulting in a reduced length of the die tooling, that lead to higher production speeds because of less back pressure in the die.

Clients of Corma don’t need to buy specific dies for each type of pipe.

Compact Die Heads

Especially designed for the production of large diameter PP and HDPE pipes.

Make adjustments to the wall thickness and die centering while in operation. Changeovers are quick and easy, as it only requires a different feed block , the die handling is simple and safe. The compact dies alleviates back pressure and increases the productivity of your corrugated plastic pipe production.

Further advantages of our die technology are vacuum cooling plugs, preparations for the In-Line Coupling and a internal pipe cooling system.

Corma Die Spider

Unique design for extruder die heads and die tooling. Creates a very strong overlapping joint in the pipe that dramatically improves impact properties. Appropriate for use with all types of plastic material and all pipe designs, but especially beneficial with PVC.
